Multiple choice: A Holiday Inn Express in the UK refused to let this woman check in to the hotel because she was,
a) drunk;
b) sans credit card;
c) obnoxious;
d) none of the above?
Correct answer: D. It appears that they didn’t let her check in for the room shed booked purely because she was Romanian.
Earlier in July, Alecsandra Puflea arrived at the Holiday Inn Express Ferensway, near Hull, with her boyfriend, to check in to the room she had pre-booked online. According to Puflea, when she handed over her passport, she was told by check-in staff, Im sorry, but we don’t accept Romanians. The member of staff then said that the hotel had implemented a screening policy for guests, after theyd discovered Romanian prostitutes working out of the rooms.
Puflea has been pretty easy-going about the incident, commenting that it did make more sense having their reasoning explained, but noting that it’s still discrimination.
The hotel manager, however, says its definitely not racial discrimination and refuses to comment any further, or give another reason why Puflea was turned away. It has, however, apologised to her and has told local police that its reviewing its policy.
Not Romanian and looking for a bed in Hull? The Holiday Inn Express in question has rooms from £66 tonight.
